target marketing in contrast to mass marketing
So what is target marketing in contrast to mass marketing? It’s amazing how many people have asked me that in the past 7 years when I told them my career as a Direct Marketing List Broker!
People often ask me what I mean by targeted lists. What type of lists? I tell them that it refers to the various types of targeted marketing lists available – direct mail, opt in email, telemarketing, and SMS.
I tell them that target marketing is part of their overall strategic marketing plan. That it allows them to roll out a very targeted campaign that focuses on the type of client their business caters to.
Lets take a look at a couple of articles that speak to target marketing in contrast to mass marketing.
Here is an article from eHow Money titled “The Difference Between Target Marketing & Mass Marketing.” The author states that target marketing is a “precise form” of communication that is aimed at clearly defined segments of the market. Whereas, mass marketing is more “generic” in that it delivers messages to large relatively undefined audiences. You will quite often see mass marketing messages in newspapers or on TV. The article goes on to say that the newer form of targeted marketing is personal marketing with the help of new social media technologies that sends personalized messages to recipients based on their specific profile.
Here is another article from Articlesnatch.com titled “The Differences Between Niche Marketing and Mass Marketing.” The author states that the main difference between niche and mass marketing is the size of the target audience. Mass marketing is trying to reach as many customers as possible. Whereas, niche marketers are going after a very specific segment/target market – like single parents, young parents, etc. Mass marketing is usually far more expensive than niche marketing.
